Glyndwr University
Our contribution to a design competition for Glyndwr University in Wrexham, this scheme includes new student housing and a beautiful upgrade to the nerve center of campus living, the Student Union building. For this part of the design we contemplated what student life is all about, focusing initially on the fun parts--the personal growth, self-discovery, and revelry so fundamental to the university experience. But despite the compelling nature of these concepts, they failed to inspire a unique architectural design.
Returning to the drawing board with a renewed focus on the fundamentals, a design centered on the acquisition of knowledge began to take shape--not only knowledge gained through the social sphere, but knowledge acquired from actual books. Books stacked high in libraries, classrooms, bedrooms, and offices.
Stacks and stacks and row upon row of books full of everything from Shakespeare to Einstein. Yes, books would be a great place to start.
